Supporting the success of others is my passion and purpose. Many people have helped me along the way in life. The example they’ve set inspires me to do everything I can to add value to the people I meet.
Saint Augustine offered valuable insight into being of service:
“Since you cannot do good to all, you are to pay special attention to those who, by the accidents of time, or place, or circumstances, are brought into closer connection with you.”
A key aspect of leadership is noticing and acting on the needs of the people you encounter. As you move forward this week, I encourage you to pay special attention to those you cross paths with.
Here are suggestions for bringing care, positivity, and leadership to the forefront of your interactions:
- Champion someone else’s great work. Sing their praises, share the details of their contributions, and highlight their specific talents.
- Spend extra time listening. We all need to be heard. Show up with curiosity for someone. Hold the space for them to share.
- Respect the time and energy of others. Arrive when you say you will. Keep it short when short is better. Follow through. Reliability is its own form of delight.
- Proactively surprise someone. Bring them their favorite coffee or treat. Write them a note of appreciation. Give them a small gift just because.
- Make things easier without being asked. Anticipate a need and quietly handle it. Taking action to show that you care is the highest form of thoughtfulness.
Enjoy doing good for the people you encounter this week. That’s exactly what makes the world a better place.
