Stress is a finite resource. Many of us act like it’s unlimited. We spend it freely on small frustrations, then find ourselves depleted when a genuine challenge arrives. The strongest leaders I know treat their emotional energy like a budget: they refuse to overspend on the little things, so they have reserves for the big ones.
Think about where stress leaks out of your day. At work, it’s the report you knew was due but started too late. The difficult conversation you postponed until it became a crisis. The inbox you let pile up until it became heavy with unread messages. At home, it’s the gas tank running on empty during the morning rush, the expired registration, the birthday gift bought in a panic the night before. None of these are hard problems. They’re simple ones that we allowed to become urgent.
Here’s the truth: urgency is often self-inflicted. And self-inflicted urgency is expensive because it burns the same emotional fuel we need for the moments that truly test us: a team member in crisis, a project derailed, a major decision, or a family member who needs our full presence.
Getting ahead of the little things doesn’t require heroics. It requires small, consistent habits:
- Do it when you see it. If a task takes less than five minutes, handle it now.
- Build margin. Leave earlier, start sooner, keep the tank half full.
- Front-load the predictable. Deadlines, renewals, and recurring commitments shouldn’t be surprises. Put them on your calendar before they turn into fire drills.
- Have the small, difficult conversations. Address small issues early, before they become big concerns.
- Do a daily five-minute “look ahead.” Scan your inbox, reflect on what your family needs, and note what’s coming before tasks become urgent.
When you stay ahead of the simple things, you’re protecting your capacity to lead when it counts. Save your stress for what deserves it. Everything else? Handle it before it can charge you interest.
