Attracting Happiness - Lead Star
written by: Courtney Lynch

More than 2,000 years ago, Aristotle gave us a checklist for a good life. Modern research keeps proving him right. His main idea was that we can’t find happiness the way we search for a great slice of pizza or the perfect beach spot. Instead, it’s something to attract.

Writer and researcher Arthur Brooks explains that Aristotle “defined happiness as eudaemonia, which means ‘good spirit.’ The philosopher meant that happiness was a divine state that would visit each of us as it pleased. Our only responsibility was to open the door to it. And we do so by living well.”

Brooks connects Aristotle’s ancient wisdom to modern life by offering these key insights and practices for attracting happiness:

  • Virtue is a habit, not a moment. Character is built through repeated practice, which mirrors how leadership is built through consistency.
  • Courage builds resilience. Acting in spite of fear helps you bounce back from setbacks, and that resilience leads to greater well-being.
  • Self-control is freedom. Mastering your impulses, including the urge to overcommit, raises both effectiveness and happiness.
  • Generosity pays off. Being fair with resources and giving to things that benefit other people lowers stress and increases joy.
  • Meaning over momentary pleasure. Focusing on what matters most, without being thrown by passing irritations, produces deeper satisfaction.
  • Secure humility is strength. Be honest about yourself to yourself, without boasting and without tearing yourself down.
  • Let go of scorekeeping and grievances. Not insisting on your full share and forgiving others’ faults lowers anxiety and frees you to lead.
  • Integrity always. Decide what you believe is right and live it, even when no one is watching.

I encourage you to pick one or two of these practices for focused personal growth. Remember that discipline feels hard before it gets easier. But a well-lived life is worth the effort. It’s what attracts lasting happiness.
