Have you ever found yourself rushing to achieve results, sometimes compromising on quality in the process? I certainly have.

Driven by a need to respond promptly and decisively, I’ve sometimes found myself caught in the whirlwind of rushing through tasks. This trait stems from my military background, which expects instant obedience to orders. In a military context, swift decisions can mean the difference between life and death. However, in civilian life, hasty decisions can have different consequences.

I’ve had my fair share of moments where I missed specific details in communications, and while these lapses didn’t result in catastrophic failures, they did sting my pride and ego. However, one of my greatest strengths as a leader and professional coach is my willingness to seek feedback, listen openly, and let go of my ego. One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned is that people prefer to receive a better product, even if it takes a bit longer, rather than a subpar one delivered instantly. Keeping this in mind, I now integrate these three key actions into my workflow.

Three Key Actions to Slow Down and Deliver Quality Results:

Pause and Assess: Before jumping into action, take a moment to pause and assess the situation. Ask yourself if an immediate response is warranted or if a more deliberate approach would yield better results. Consider the potential impact and consequences of your actions.

Prioritize Quality: Shift your focus from speed to quality. Understand that excellence often takes time and attention to detail. Prioritize delivering the best possible outcome, even if this requires slightly extending the timeline.

Seek Input: Don’t hesitate to seek input from colleagues, mentors, or team members. They can provide valuable insights and help you catch any blind spots. Collaborative decision-making can lead to more thoughtful and practical solutions.

While the urge to respond instantly and act swiftly is natural, it’s crucial to recognize the value of slowing down to ensure quality over quantity. Remember, it’s not just about speed; it’s about the lasting impact of your leadership.
