We’ve never met a professional whose dreams were beyond their capabilities.

That says a lot … considering we’ve been supporting leaders for nearly 20 years through our coaching services.

We have, though, met many whose fears, worries, and insecurities have prevented them from living the life they’ve envisioned for themselves.

In these moments, we challenge leaders to get to the heart of the issue by asking a simple question:

Why haven’t you been successful yet at taking the first step?

Their answers often include:

  • Not enough time or the timing is wrong
  • Not enough money
  • They don’t have the support of a critical stakeholder

These are often smoke signals for the real, underlying hold-backs:

  • Fear of mistakes and failure
  • An inability to prioritize
  • A past failure that has shaken their confidence
  • They don’t trust themselves to follow through

There are other hold-backs, too, of course. Maybe some of these sound familiar to you and are, in fact, preventing you from pursuing the dreams most important to you?

To bet on yourself, you need to understand what’s holding you back. We’re here to say that everything can be overcome . . . and we mean everything.

Fear kills more dreams than failure ever will. We know this because we’ve failed many times, yet still keep stepping toward the dreams that inspire us. Failure isn’t fatal, but fear can surely paralyze. Understanding your fears, in relation to risk, will allow you to recognize your risk disposition—your personal relationship with risk. This awareness will allow you to appreciate where you are with risk, and what you need to do to right-size it so it doesn’t prevent you from achieving what matters most.

The clearer you become about what’s holding you back, the better you’re able to move through your challenges with greater success.
