H.O.P.E. Floats, Leaders Steer - Lead Star
Written by Josh Fisher

A colleague recently passed along Gallup’s latest Global Leadership Study, and one finding stood out: the surprising importance of hope in leadership. It took me back to a line from The Guardian, where Kevin Costner tells Ashton Kutcher, “Well, hope don’t float, Hodge.” In rescue swimmer school, maybe not. But in leadership? Hope floats. Here’s the twist: Hope floats, but leaders steer.

Many leaders assume that performance is fueled by tangible incentives—higher pay, career advancement, flexible schedules—and while those certainly matter, they’re not what truly inspires people to show up, contribute, and stay.

According to Gallup’s Global Leadership Studyfollowers want far more human qualities from their leaders: hope, trust, compassion, and stability. These aren’t leadership buzzwords; they are the foundation of meaningful and effective leadership. Without them, even the most capable leaders risk losing engagement, retention, and morale. When leaders meet these needs—especially hope—they unlock something greater: Teams that are motivated, resilient, and ready to rise to the challenge. So how do you lead with hope at the center?

Here are four ways to lead with H.O.P.E.:

H – Help Others See the Future

Hope is not passive optimism; it’s the ability to articulate a compelling vision for the future. Teams look to their leaders for direction, especially during times of uncertainty. A leader’s responsibility is to clarify the path forward, connect individual roles to a larger purpose, and help their team see the opportunities ahead.

Action Step: Assess whether your team understands where the organization is headed. Are you providing a vision that is both realistic and inspiring? Make it a habit to communicate regularly how today’s work contributes to long-term success.

O – Offer Trust and Transparency

Trust is the foundation of all successful teams. Without it, even the most well-intentioned efforts fall flat. Leaders build trust through consistent actions, clear communication, and accountability. Trust isn’t just about keeping promises—it’s about being honest when challenges arise, admitting mistakes, and ensuring every team member feels valued and heard.

Action Step: Take an honest look at how you communicate. Do your team members feel comfortable bringing issues to you? If trust has been damaged, take responsibility and rebuild it by being transparent and following through on commitments.

P – Prioritize People Over Process

Compassionate leadership recognizes that employees are not just resources but people with goals, challenges, and emotions. Leaders who prioritize people over rigid processes create an environment where engagement thrives. It doesn’t mean ignoring accountability. It means ensuring that people feel supported in their work and that their well-being is a priority.

Action Step: Make time for conversations that aren’t just about deliverables. Check in on your team members, understand their challenges, and advocate for their development.

E – Establish Stability in Uncertainty

Change is inevitable, but instability is not. The best leaders act as a steady presence, providing reassurance and consistency even when circumstances are unpredictable. Stability doesn’t mean resisting change—it means guiding your team through it with clarity and confidence.

Action Step: Communicate frequently during periods of uncertainty. Even if you don’t have all the answers, let your team know what they can count on. Reinforce the values and priorities to remain unchanged.

Intentional Leadership Starts Today

When leaders intentionally cultivate hope, trust, compassion, and stability, they don’t just manage teams; they elevate them. Take a moment to reflect this week: What’s your strongest H.O.P.E. quality? Which one needs more attention? Then, commit to one tangible action to improve in that area. Leadership is built one decision at a time—make yours count.
