Accountability in Leaders
Lead Star, September 16, 2015
How you respond to challenges, problems, and people will largely determine your ability to lead others. You can’t control a lot of things, but you can control your actions and reactions.
A true test of leadership abilities is how you respond when, despite your best efforts, you fail to meet expectations. It is not the failure itself, but how you react to that failure that determines whether you are a leader.
- Inspire accountability by accepting responsibility and not placing blame.
- Look internally first to understand their role in a problem.
- Realize that if they are close enough to a problem, something that they did, or failed to do, probably contributed to the outcome.
Work to eliminate excuses from your dialogue and pay attention when blame enters into a conversation. Focus on accountability for your performance.
